Homework and Revision

HOME LEARNING

At The Purbeck School, we know completing home learning is essential to long term academic success. It allows children to extend their learning and to reinforce what has been learnt in class.

Y7 – 9 HOMEWORK

Every day, all pupils should get into the positive habits of studying for around one hour.

Home learning will be in three parts:

  1. English: Sparx Reader
  2. Maths: Sparx Maths
  3. Knowledge organiser self-quizzing

SPARX READER

www.sparxreader.com

Sparx Reader gives all students access to a rich range of books, with quizzes throughout to support engaged reading.

  • Each week, tasks are set Monday to Monday.
  • In total, reading and quizzes should take around one hour.
  • Students must complete 100% in each task.
  • Gold Readers can add any book and earn points by keeping reading logs.

SPARX MATHS

www.sparxmaths.com

Sparx-Maths provides practice on what you’ve learnt in class and consolidation what you’ve learnt through the year.

  • Each week, tasks are set Monday to Monday.
  • In total, tasks should take around one hour.
  • Students should show their workings in your orange homework book.
  • Students must complete 100% in each task.

KNOWLEDGE ORGANISER SELF-QUIZZING

Each child has been issued with a Knowledge Organiser. They will be quizzed regularly on what they are expected to learn for each subject. Your child should pick one of our Independent Study Strategies, spend at least 20mins each day revising and bring evidence of this self-quizzing to the lesson. Study strategies include quizzing using Look, Cover, Write, Check, creating Mind Maps, Flashcards or Posters, and using practice example questions.

Y10 – 11 HOMEWORK

For all GCSE courses, all students are set home learning. It is important that students spend around one-hour each evening completing the tasks set by their subject teachers.

All students have been given a GCSE Homework and Revision booklet that provides key information, advice and guidance. This includes:

  • How each subject is assessed
  • What homework activities your child must complete each week
  • What revision activities your child should be completing each week to prepare for their exams
  • How your child can get help and support

Students are encouraged to keep this booklet on them at all times. If homework tasks are completed within time, then they should use the guidance in their booklet to revise and prepare for the examinations which they sit at the end of the course.

REVISION

Independent study involves undertaking activities that will help a student to improve in that area.

There are many effective ways you can study independently – here are a few strategies:

  • Self-quizzing – Look, Cover, Write, Check
  • Mind Maps
  • Flash Cards
  • Posters
  • Practice Example Questions
  • Revision Websites

Y11 REVISION SESSIONS 2024-25

The Purbeck School deliver a programme of revision sessions to support student’s complete coursework and prepare for their GCSE examinations. Many of these sessions run throughout the year. If you wish to attend any revision session then please sign up with your subject teacher in order to find out the time and venue of the session. More subjects will deliver revision sessions as we get closer to the exams.

Many departments also offer drop in support sessions, where students can go and see their teachers if they require help with any part of their study. These are usually one-to-one with the teacher or held in small groups.

We also offer our Study Plus as a place for students to focus on revision and to complete home learning, which is held in room E14 from 3.10 – 4.10pm.

HELP AND SUPPORT

At home, please support your child by ensuring that they have a quiet environment to do their home learning. It is important that your child gets into positive and effective study habits now so that they can fulfil their learning potential.

To organise their homework and independent study, students can download and use our planner:

Student Planner 2024-25

If your child is struggling with any aspect of their home learning, then please encourage them to:

  • Go and see their subject teacher.
  • Attend Study Plus, our after-school home learning club, which is held Tuesday to Thursday from 3.20 – 4.10pm in the cafe. In these sessions, we can provide a laptop if you are struggling at home with internet access.

If your child works hard and completes their home learning to a high standard every week, then they will fulfil their potential in across all of their subjects.
