Extra-Curricular Activities
Taking part in extra-curricular clubs is a fantastic opportunity for students to further develop their social, moral, spiritual and cultural skills as well as in some clubs, specific subject or practical skills. We are pleased to say that our extra-curricular programme is now up and running. There will be a variety of clubs on offer and therefore we feel that for this reason our expectation that all students should take part in at least one club is reasonable. Activities run during lunchtimes from 1.15pm to 1.45pm, and after school from 3.10pm to 4.10pm. If your child is planning on taking part in a PE club, whether this is at lunchtime or after school, they will need their full PE kit.
Extra-curricular Activities Programme
Students should check the daily bulletin and extra-curricular display board in the language corridor for up-to-date information about all clubs.
The PE department offer an amazing variety of clubs and this helps us to utilise the sports facilities that are on offer as well as participate in many fixtures across the year. In addition to this, there are sports facilities available daily for year 7, 8 & 9 on the front playground, year 8 & 9 on the tennis courts and year 10 & 11 football club on the astro pitch during break and lunchtimes.
Departments may still offer extra activities on days other than those identified in the programme as a need presents itself, including many revision sessions which are provided in particular as the exam season approaches. Please use the link below to see all clubs and their respective timings.
Africa
Ghana Adventure
Bi-annually, we aim to offer students the opportunity to spend a fortnight volunteering in an African country. Prior to Covid, Purbeck visited Rwanda three times – please see the information further on this page. In July 2024, Assistant Head Simon Holmes flew to Ghana with thirteen students from years 11, 12 and 13. The PowerPoint slides below provide an overview of the mind-changing time that we experienced as we taught and built in The Lords Academy!
Anloga; visited beautiful beaches and west Africa’s second largest waterfall; experienced the horrific story of a slave fort; and benefited hugely from the welcome and kindness of our Ghanaian friends. The final slide includes a link to African Adventures who are our partners in delivering this trip – we will be publicising it again in the autumn term.
Journey to Rwanda (2016, 2017, 2019)
The Purbeck School has visited Rwanda three times and made a lasting partnership with The Peace and Hope Initiative in Kigali. Students taught in the Excel Primary School in Rwamagana; learned about the genocide of 1994 by visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, walking with widows and touring historical sites; enjoyed visiting a local market; and took a safari in Akagera National Park (zebra, monkeys, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes and elephants!).
