The Purbeck School, in conjunction with ‘Camps International’, participated in a 4 week expedition to Tanzania during July and August 2024. ‘Purbeck’ was joined by two other schools from Nottingham , the Oakwood Academy and Redhill Academy to form a group of 16 students.

•The trip contained an expedition element, which on this occasion was a 5 day trek to the summit of Mt Meru, with all students making it to the summit.

•Other activities included working on two different school buildings, along with assorted cultural and wildlife conservation projects.

•The group also had some downtime;  going on Safari in Tarangire National Park , visiting a coffee plantation and the Kilasiya Waterfalls.   

You’ll see them gathered in small groups, talking of places and people that are unfamiliar, with faraway place names; Tanga, Mt Meru, Mombasa, Ndarakwai, Dar es Salaam. At other times you may just see them pass each other , no words need to be spoken, just a mutually respectful nod exchanged.

Only when it is appropriate is there chat about places, experiences, people, events and friends; ‘Keys’, chapatis, project work and singing. 

They are all out there somewhere , working and making positive contributions to society, just out of sight, but always reflecting and acting upon those experiences that were Tanzania 2024. 

Out there somewhere is a group of people that most of us are completely unaware of. Its membership is small and will never become more; for it is neither a club nor an organisation. In everyday life there is little to identify these people, yet they can recognise each other from afar with barely a glance. I’m talking about the members of the Purbeck School Expedition to Tanzania 2024.

If you are a member of this small fraternity or know of them, they are easy to spot, the clues are all there, you just have to notice. Look around and you’ll start to see and hear the tell tale clues; a distinctive grey T-shirt glimpsed in the crowd or along a corridor; unusual necklaces and bracelets perhaps. Individuals looking lean and tanned, obvious T-shirt and sock tan lines that tell of long hours in the sunshine.
