Life at The Purbeck School Sixth Form: From the HORSES' students' mouths!

Tonia Lamenyuy

Purbeck’s sixth form has been a wonderful bridge between my school years and my next steps. It has been easier for me as I’ve been a part of the school since year 7 and made many friends, especially in sixth form where I have made some lifelong friends that have brought new memories. Most of my school years I was known for being polite and quite shy but throughout my time in the sixth form I have had the chance to grow into a more confident person.

The teachers are very supportive, always ready to help us not only academically but also personally. The Sixth Form Centre is a lively, welcoming space where we all feel comfortable, whether we’re studying or socialising. It’s a place full of positivity and encouragement, where we each are treated as young adults with dreams and goals.

As a sixth former, I know that it’s a big transition from Year 11, but Purbeck’s community makes it feel manageable. We have smaller classes, which allows us to build a closer connection to the teacher and classmates, which means you can open up more to them if you are ever struggling or need support. You also have lots of support all throughout sixth form, from people like Mr Waterman (manager of sixth form) who is always around the sixth form centre ready to help you or even to just have a chat. The sixth form head of years, Mr Smith and Mr Clay and Mr Holmes, the head of sixth form, are also people you can interact with and see, often leading fun assemblies. The sixth form offers a range of experiences for everyone: from study periods that help us develop independence, leadership roles and many fun, exciting enrichment activities. There is something for everyone.

Purbeck’s Sixth Form helps us grow, acknowledging our potential and helps to prepare us to confidently move forward with the next step in our lives.

Transitioning from lower school into sixth form can be overwhelming and stressful which means it's fundamental to have a support system in place to ease the adjustment. The Purbeck School offers assistance at every point during your sixth form journey whether that's your specific subject teachers taking time out of their day to help with something you're stuck on, or being able to talk to your tutors regarding managing stress. The relationships built with teachers and other students are based off of a more personal level than in lower school. This means that everything is tailored to your individual needs such as teaching methods and how you spend your time in your study periods. My experiences at The Purbeck School sixth form have helped to build my confidence both externally and internally due to the immense support from my peers and the staff here. I am now more comfortable with approaching people when I'm struggling, which is a general feeling amongst all students here.

Joining Purbeck’s sixth form as a previous secondary student at this school made me feel apprehensive; I understood that the jump from GCSEs to A Levels would be significant. Luckily, the transition came to be smooth and comfortable to adjust to. Whilst our sixth form strives for us to develop our own independence, it does not neglect the motivational support that is always at hand, and I feel there is a true sense of community I am part of here.

I am proud to be a student at Purbeck’s sixth form, the enriching activities handed to us are filled with numerous opportunities for both personal and academic “growth”. The supportive environment encourages students to aspire to excellence and develop perseverance. With the wide range of subject choices and extracurricular activities, students can explore their academic interests on a deeper level, preparing for their future careers. The dedicated teaching staff provide personalised guidance and support, ensuring that all students achieve their full potential. The sense of community among our sixth form fosters a positive and motivational atmosphere, making my own, and others' experience, truly exceptional.

As a sixth former, you should expect to build relationships and connections you will value forever, learning to grow and become young adults who are ready to cross the bridge to further education.

The transition from lower school to sixth form can be both daunting and exciting, as it is the start of a whole new chapter in a student's life. Here at The Purbeck Sixth Form, you will feel welcomed by everyone and be provided with any additional support you may need throughout your journey. From personal experience, I was amazed by how smooth the transition was. All teachers understand that it is a significant step up from Year 11, which is important as it means that students feel comfortable talking about what’s on their mind, whether it’s academic struggles or just sixth form life in general.

Teachers with expertise in their respective subjects combined with smaller classes provide a fantastic working environment. This also means that teachers will know you personally, meaning that students can create good relationships with them and their classmates. The Sixth Form Centre is a designated area for Year 12s and 13s, where everyone can go to study and, during breaktime and lunchtime, socialise. There is also a variety of enrichment opportunities on offer, and there is the option to apply to become a member of the leadership team in the second year as well.

The chance to study independently in study periods provides key skills which students will use in the future, and whatever that future is, The Purbeck Sixth Form will guide you on your way there. During your time here, you will be treated like an adult, and the aim is that you grow to be able to cross that metaphorical bridge into the next steps of your life.

I have been in this school since Year 7, so I feel like I know the 'ins and outs' of it by now. Applying to sixth form, I thought the only thing that would change would be the workload, but I was wrong. The teachers and the students make me sad that this is only a 2-year experience- we have been given an incredible amount of support and experiences to develop as young adults. From Free and Equal Conferences to Bold Voices workshops, The Purbeck School Sixth Form has stretched and challenged me into a more inquisitive, curious teenage girl. The teachers have nurtured my interest in the world, giving me the chance and unending support to apply for Oxbridge, have a voice in the school in my Wellbeing Lead role and creating a space where we are allowed to explore our values. I will always remember my time here fondly and as an important part of my journey into adulthood.

Life at sixth form has been really enjoyable, and studying subjects like maths, chemistry, and physics has made it both challenging and rewarding. There’s a strong balance of independence and guidance here, allowing us to take responsibility for our studies while knowing there’s plenty of support available whenever needed. The teachers are always approachable, providing help with difficult topics and encouraging us to reach our full potential. Beyond academics, being part of the charity team has also helped me develop important skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership, which I know will benefit me in the future. The sixth form has a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to connect with others and enjoy the experience. I’d highly recommend it to anyone considering joining.

After joining The Purbeck School in Year 7, five years later I knew I wasn't ready to leave and attending the sixth form felt like the obvious and right choice. Although the jump was difficult at first, the support put in place made it much more manageable with compassionate and understanding staff in every corner. Every teacher has been more than willing to help when asked and has been particularly helpful with my UCAS application process, in which the sixth form has great career advisors. The opportunities up for grabs have been hugely valuable for me, specifically attending the diversity conference, becoming a bold voice ambassador and joining the leadership team as the head of literacy. Over the two years, the staff enable students to reach their best potential and slowly become ready to move onto their post 18 options.

My experience at the Purbeck Sixth Form had been thoroughly enjoyable. I study Chemistry, Biology and Geography and have found success in all of these subjects. This is because the teachers have a clear passion for the subject and so when teaching the lesson they can go into greater detail so you can have a deeper understanding of the topics. There is a large amount of support from the Sixth Form, for example silent study sessions which allows students to go and get on with their work in a hardworking environment. The social side of sixth form is also brilliant and it is a great place to make friends who will support you throughout. Lastly, the Purbeck Sixth Form has helped me develop aspirations and it has provided me with the opportunities to dream big.

I’ve had a great time at The Purbeck Sixth Form so far, studying maths, physics, and chemistry. These subjects are challenging yet rewarding, and they’re made even better by the expert teachers who bring them to life with an engaging environment. There’s also a lot beyond academics to get involved in—I’m part of the charity leadership team, which I hope will provide me with lifelong skills beyond education. Whenever I’m struggling, I know I can turn to my teachers for guidance and support; they’re always ready to help and point me in the right direction. The school has really helped prepare me for what I want to do next, and I feel confident as I look towards university.

After having already attended The Purbeck School for 5 years, moving up to the sixth form was an obvious choice for me. The sixth form offers many opportunities alongside A-Level studies. These include weekly enrichment activities, talks from outside companies and universities, and leadership roles. As Swift’s house captain, I’ve had the opportunity to have a say in both sixth form and lower-school matters and events. This role on the leadership team has allowed me to gain the skills I’ll need when I leave sixth form, going onto uni and later employment. The sixth form has developed my confidence, organisation and time-management skills, whilst encouraging initiative and hard work. My teachers are passionate about their subjects and very willing to help when needed. The sixth form staff, along with tutors, are there to support and guide us through these two important years.

The Purbeck School Sixth Form is a great place to go to school; all my teachers are passionate about their subjects, and strive for our classes to do well. I love all my subjects, and feel that the content and lessons are always interesting. Additionally, at Purbeck, there is always someone available to talk to, whether that is about work or personal problems. As an external student, I was very anxious about starting a new school, but found it to be a very welcoming environment, and I settled in promptly. Significantly, the school is also abundantly helpful regarding next steps; they have given a variety of opportunities like Bournemouth UCAS fare, Realising Opportunities, and Exeter Scholars, which I have found beneficial in choosing which universities I am interested in. I would thoroughly recommend The Purbeck Sixth Form, as I have really enjoyed my time here.

Since joining The Purbeck School Sixth Form I have been given so much more freedom and independence to prepare me for going off to university. This has helped me to improve my confidence and the sixth form has also given me opportunities for leadership roles to further this and boost my people and organisational skills. The school’s sixth form is brilliant, and I always feel as though there is someone I can go to if I am struggling or just need a chat

Having joined The Purbeck School for sixth form as an external student, I was apprehensive and nervous, however it soon became apparent that my time here was instead going to be an exciting and fulfilling journey. It is without doubt that the sixth form here at Purbeck supports our personal needs and guides us through challenges, as staff members get to know us as individuals, ensuring we are on track and feel motivated. Teachers often have an open-door policy, meaning as sixth formers we are able to seek help with school work, and advice regarding further education at any time.

Sixth form is often described as the bridge in our education, and The Purbeck School Sixth Form enables us to grow as individuals, have high aspirations, and successfully cross this bridge

I am studying Chemistry, Photography and Sport at The Purbeck School Sixth Form. I chose to continue studying here because the teachers create a safe and calm environment to help support my learning and develop my understanding of the subjects, all of whom are specialists in their respective fields. I have been given so many opportunities to expand my learning and to develop myself personally, such as the opportunity to travel to Ghana to teach in, and rebuild, schools. The Purbeck School has been a big part of my life, supporting me through all the struggles I have faced since joining in Year 7 all the way into my last year here. The school has prepared me for life beyond these walls and I feel confident as I move on to the prospect of university

The jump from GCSEs to A-Levels is significant but I felt supported and welcomed by the whole of the sixth form team. Every single one of the teachers is an expert in their subject and have an in-depth knowledge of both the content and the exams. The reduced class sizes mean you can build up a relationship with both your classmates and your teachers. They know you and therefore know your strengths and weaknesses so can personally tailor how they help and support you throughout your A-Levels. If you have any issues, they are all there for you because they care about your welfare and want you to achieve. During our time here at The Purbeck Sixth Form, we grow and become young adults who are ready to cross the bridge to further education and the world

I decided to continue my studies at The Purbeck Sixth Form after attending Purbeck since year 7, due to the familiarity of the school, the support from teachers and the curriculum which offers a good range of subjects to choose from. The amount of support you get from teachers during your two years at sixth form is phenomenal, whether that’s help with your subjects or post 18 options, and helping you in a way so you’re comfortable with leaving Purbeck with an idea of your future. Every teacher has an ‘open door’ policy so you are able to go into the classroom for help anytime or give them an email which they are more than happy to answer and help. Purbeck also allows you to gain great leadership skills: I have become a House Captain, allowing me to gain knowledge and skills as a leader and making great friends within the leadership group and within the sixth form

I chose to continue my studies at the Purbeck Sixth Form after attending The Purbeck School from Year 7. The teachers are brilliant and specialists in their subjects. This is really good as there is someone there who can help you delve deeper in to a specific subject that you might want to study beyond A-levels and help you get where you want to go in the future. I am currently studying Maths, Physics and Photography A-levels to hopefully go and study Film Production at university. The support of the sixth form staff and teachers have helped me through the UCAS application process. As well as this, The Purbeck Sixth Form has provided me with amazing extra-curricular and super curricular activities such as work experience and other opportunities to develop my knowledge and passion for my studies. I have also enjoyed the social side to sixth form through getting to meet new friends and partaking in fun events such as charity dress up days and sports day
