At The Purbeck School, sixth-form students make applications for the roles below:
There are, therefore, twelve distinct roles who will come together to form the Leadership Team, with additional students working within the four teams of Welfare, Charity, Publicity and Social and Literacy.
Other responsibility roles:
Faculty representatives, 1 or 2 in each: The Arts; the Sciences, Design, Communications, Maths, Sport, Humanities, IT
Membership of the Welfare Team, Charity Team, Publicity and Social Team, Literacy Team.

Year 13 Leadership: job descriptions
As a student leader, you are in a position of responsibility to have a positive impact on the student community, running events and activities, or providing support to your fellow students. You will be able to gain valuable experience and take satisfaction from making a significant difference to The Purbeck School and Sixth Form.
There are a number of different roles available which offer the chance for students to gain experience in many different avenues. Successfully conducting these roles will be enjoyable, perhaps at times challenging, and also invaluable when applying for apprenticeships and undergraduate places at university.
Applications for the posts below are made in the first half of the summer term, with responsibility holders in place after the trial exams (final two weeks).
There will be a twelve-person leadership team, each with specific responsibilities.
The leadership team will be given a budget to help finance particular initiatives. They will meet with Mr Darley once every half-term (probably on a Wednesday afternoon).

House Captains
Four positions, one in each house; students do not need to apply for a position in a particular house.

Key responsibilities of a house captain:
- Drive mass participation within house competitions with the aim of winning the competitions and house cup.
- Support the transition of new students into The Purbeck School.
- Be an overall role-model to lower year students.
Key integral inputs:
- Welcome Evenings – 3rd & 4th July
- Working with the allocated House Leader
- Take part in school tours
- Help to communicate and foster house ethos
- Meet the tutor event: meet, greet and support
- Year 7 Transition Day and the parents’ evening – Thursday 6th July
- Lead student house leadership meetings

- Create and lead inter-house competition
- To actively represent the school in the promotion and of open evening tours
The key to a successful student leader is independence, organisation and management. A good leader does not need to try and do everything themselves. Develop a strong team and allow others to help you be successful.

Student Leader of Welfare and Student Mentoring

About the role
As a wellbeing leader, your main responsibility is to aid in improving the wellbeing of pupils in our school as well as educating pupils on certain topics that correlate with wellbeing and mental health. Your main priorities are to plan events/activities for the different mental health days/weeks: this could come in the form of assemblies, lunchtime or tutor activities, running in safe spaces for more vulnerable students, supporting with lower school tutor groups and working alongside Mrs Stevens and Mr Hopwood.
Responsibilities
- Working alongside Mrs Stevens and Mr Hopwood as well as liaising with the Charity Team to organise events.
- Plan and organise key mental health days/weeks e.g. Children’s Mental Health Week.
- Organising and maintaining a calendar of events.
- Interacting with pupils and getting feedback on how wellbeing can be improved within school.
- Run activities at lunchtime.
- Being observant and proactive in regards to the school environment relating to wellbeing e.g. ensuring signposting and awareness posters are up to date.
- Come up with ideas that can improve wellbeing in school.
- Create PowerPoints and educate pupils on different aspects on mental health/wellbeing.
- Taking responsibility for coordinating and managing the members of the Welfare Team.
- Contribute to SSLT activities and events including whole school events.

Wellbeing is critical to cognitive development and social and emotional development. At The Purbeck School, wellbeing is explicit within all areas of the curriculum and wellbeing practices are visible within the learning environment, enabling pupils to feel confident, express emotions, build good relationships, live productively, cope with stresses and adapt in times of change.

- Working alongside Mr Hopwood and Mrs Watson as well as liaising with the Welfare Team to organise events.
- Plan and organise key wellbeing inputs.

Student Leader of Charity

About the role
The role of Charity Leader is to act as the school’s main ambassador on events involving both the Sixth Form and the main school; for instance, Comic Relief, the MacMillan Coffee Morning, Children’s Mental Health week and others. Day-to-day activities in the role include whole team meetings (led by Mr Waterman), planning for upcoming events, creating and maintaining a charity calendar and being a role model to other students.
Responsibilities
- The role requires working alongside other roles, such as the Wellbeing and Equality & Diversity leaders.
- Liaising with Mr Waterman and Mr Clay.
- Attendance at weekly team meetings, including setting a weekly charity agenda item for discussion at the Senior Student Leadership Team Meeting.
- Taking responsibility for coordinating and managing the members of the Charity Team.
- Planning and performing tutor time and assembly activities.
- Contribute to SSLT activities and events including whole school events.
Candidate Requirements

- Must also be good at problem solving as things do not always go to plan.
- Must be flexible and adaptable.

Student Leader of Equality and Diversity

Student Leader of Publicity

About the role
- Liaise regularly with Mr Holmes and Miss Marsh and play an active part in promoting the ethos and values of The Purbeck School through marketing, organising and attending events within the community.
- Plan and organise student involvement at the school’s internal and external events such as open days, parents’ evenings, celebration evenings, and events such as the whole school production and art exhibitions. Duties on these occasions vary but will include hosting, speeches, assisting with refreshments, welcoming, and similar.
- Have a major input into the content and design of the sixth form’s online and social media presence.

Student Leader of Social Events

Whilst working within the Publicity and Social Team, your principal responsibility will be to lead the planning and organisation of sixth form student events, including the final day of the Autumn Term, the Year 13 Prom, and celebratory barbeques etc.

- Planning and performing assembly activities and liaising with fellow students to gain ideas and secure interest in social events.
- Contribute to SSLT activities and events, including whole school events.

At The Purbeck School we constantly strive to ensure that the student experience is an excellent one. To this end, we regularly source student voice in order to evaluate our educational provision, our pastoral care and the standard of the school site and resources. This new role will place a dedicated student at the centre of much of this work and is an opportunity to help shape an even better future for both the sixth form and school as a whole.

Student Leader of Literacy

Literacy is one of the key elements of the school’s development plan: when students (and staff) are better able to read, write and speak effectively, all will benefit. Like many schools, many students arrive at The Purbeck School with a literacy deficit. The student who is Leader of Literacy will have a key role in the planning, organisation and delivery of literacy initiatives.
About the role
- Liaising with Mr McNaughton and Mrs Bartlett.
- Supporting lower school literacy initiatives such as the Reading Plus programme and Reading Logs.
- Linking with primary school
- Promote reading, writing and oracy.
- Organise the staffing of student support of younger students e.g. tutor time reading.
- Assist with identified projects in the LRC.

Student Faculty Representatives

About the role
There will be one or two students representing and working within the following areas: the Arts; the Sciences, Design, Communications, Maths, Sport, Humanities, IT.
As a Student Faculty Representative, you will:
- Support subjects during school events such as Option Evenings, Open Evenings and Taster Day.
- Supporting learning through booster sessions, lunchtime clubs and revision sessions.
- Mentoring small groups of school students.
- Specific faculty-related activities, e.g.: running student of the week/month initiatives; publicising and helping to organise the Science Fair; publicising and helping to support the annual musical, art exhibitions etc.
- Meet the Head of Department/Faculty once a term to discuss any concerns/ issues.

Membership of the Welfare Team, Charity Team, Publicity and Social Team, Literacy Team
It may be that you have a strong interest in one of these areas and a willingness to develop your experience, but you do not wish to lead a team.
Membership of one of these teams, where you will work with three or four other sixth formers, still gives you the opportunity to be actively involved in an area which will benefit The Purbeck School, whilst also gaining invaluable experience which you can refer to in apprenticeship and university applications.
The Welfare Team
This is an opportunity to offer support to both individual students and broader groups as we seek to best support the welfare of fellow students at The Purbeck School. You will receive training from experienced and qualified staff before offering various opportunities to assist lower school students when they are experiencing issues.
The Charity Team
This is an exciting chance to make a real difference, coordinating termly events to raise money for our dedicated charities. You will help to plan special and unique events and initiatives and seek to raise as much money as possible to help those less fortunate than ourselves. If you have ideas and energy, this is for you!
The Publicity and Social Team
If you fancy developing the school’s publicity and marketing strategies, and developing your own skills in this area, then joining the Publicity and Social Team might be for you. In addition, you will help to plan and organise sixth form social events such as the final day of the Autumn Term and the Year 13 Prom.
The Literacy Team
You will support literacy in the lower school through reading with individual students and sometimes small groups of students. You will also help to organise and staff literacy initiatives such as World Book Day, and work on publicising great books, writing competitions and debating clubs.
